Barrie is a cashmere knitter in Hawick, in the Scottish Borders, founded in 1903 and bought by Chanel in 2012. Hawick is one of a handful of towns where full-fashioned cashmere knitwear is still made at scale, a trade the Borders built on soft water for washing and finishing rather than on any single mill's reputation.
What separates Barrie from the other names in that town is who it supplies. The factory produces knitwear for Chanel, which is the reason a house with essentially no consumer profile operates at that standard of finishing.
Resale prices follow brand recognition rather than construction, and outside the trade Barrie has almost none. A Barrie-labelled sweater generally lists below what a better-known Scottish name asks for comparable knitwear, and well below Chanel-labelled pieces made in the same town.
Buy on condition rather than on provenance. Cashmere knitwear fails at the cuffs, the hem ribbing and the underarms first, so look there before anywhere else, and treat heavy pilling as a cost rather than a cosmetic issue. Sizing follows Scottish knitwear conventions and runs closer than most people expect, so ask for a flat chest measurement instead of trusting a letter size.
