Luxury pieces at unexpected prices Why now is the moment to buy

Six garments from Chloé, The Row, Isaia, Tom Ford, Loro Piana and Reformation, and what the size of each price gap actually tells you about the category it sits in.

The six pieces here are separated by a factor of fifteen in asking price, but the gaps between what they cost and what they once retailed for are not distributed the way you would expect. The most famous names are not the deepest discounts. The deepest discounts are in menswear tailoring, and that is a fact about the category rather than about these particular sellers.

A sport coat has to fit in the shoulder, the chest and the sleeve at once, which means a 40R buyer will scroll past every 42L in the listings. That narrowness is what pushes a wool jacket to a fraction of its original price while a viscose tee from The Row, which fits anyone within a size of XS, holds at half. Womenswear sits in between: a coat is forgiving through the body, a blouse more so again.

So the useful question when a gap looks extreme is not whether the piece is authentic, though that is worth checking. It is whether the gap is explained by fit, by a thin listing with two photographs and no measurements, or by something in the garment itself that the photographs are not showing.

Chloe Double Breasted Coat UK Size 8
Chloé
Chloe Double Breasted Coat UK Size 8
$88 vs $2,345 retail 96% below
Eighty-eight dollars against a retail figure of $2,345 is the widest gap in this edit outside the tailoring, and the listing gives you almost nothing to explain it. There is no fabric composition, no measurements and no condition note, which is exactly the kind of thin listing that keeps a coat unsold rather than any defect in the coat. A UK 8 runs generous in double-breasted outerwear, so the size is less of a constraint here than the missing information is.

The Row Womens T-Shirt White Viscose Scoop Neck Short Sleeve XS
The Row
The Row Womens T-Shirt White Viscose Scoop Neck Short Sleeve XS
$185 vs $370 retail 50% below
Exactly half retail is a shallow discount by the standards of this page, and that is the point: The Row's plain jersey and knit tops are the most reliably resold items the label makes. Viscose drapes closer to the body than cotton and shows wear faster, so on a white piece the thing to look at is the underarm and the neckline rather than the price. At $185 the margin for disappointment is narrower than it looks.

GIANLUCA ISAIA Napoli - Dark Tan Windowpane Men's Sport Coat 40R/50EU 100% Wool
Isaia
GIANLUCA ISAIA Napoli - Dark Tan Windowpane Men's Sport Coat 40R/50EU 100% Wool
$71 vs $2,200 retail 97% below
Seventy-one dollars is the number that should make you slow down rather than hurry. Isaia builds in Naples, which means a soft shoulder and a light chest that flatter a narrow frame and look collapsed on a broad one, and a 40R is a genuinely small jacket that the majority of buyers scroll past. The dark tan windowpane is also a daytime pattern with no evening use, which narrows the audience again, but at this price a good tailor has room to work.

Tom Ford Navy Blue Herringbone Suit Jacket Blazer 54L IT/ 44L US men's Notch Lap
Tom Ford
Tom Ford Navy Blue Herringbone Suit Jacket Blazer 54L IT/ 44L US men's Notch Lap
$424 vs $3,700 retail 89% below
Note the 44L. A long is the hardest jacket in menswear to place secondhand, and it is doing more to explain the $424 asking price than the $3,700 retail figure does. Navy herringbone with a notch lapel is the most usable pattern a jacket of this cut can have, so if the length suits you this is the piece on the page with the least working against it.

Loro Piana Sweater Mens XL Beige V Neck Cotton Knit Pullover Made In Italy
Loro Piana
Loro Piana Sweater Mens XL Beige V Neck Cotton Knit Pullover Made In Italy
$127 vs $800 retail 84% below
Cotton is the reason this is $127 and not $400. Loro Piana's resale value is carried almost entirely by its cashmere and its wool-silk blends, and buyers searching the brand's name are rarely looking for a cotton pullover, which leaves the cotton pieces to sit. An XL V-neck in beige is about as broadly wearable as knitwear gets, and cotton survives moths and careless washing in a way the brand's more expensive fibres do not.

Reformation Nell Top Blouse Floral Blue Sweetheart Neckline - 10
Reformation
Reformation Nell Top Blouse Floral Blue Sweetheart Neckline - 10
$28 vs $148 retail 81% below
Twenty-eight dollars from $148 is the shallowest absolute saving here and the easiest decision. Reformation produces in volume and its prints are seasonal, so last year's floral drops steeply regardless of condition, which is a very different mechanism from the scarcity pricing driving the jackets above. A sweetheart neckline in a size 10 is also one of the few cuts on this page that will fit correctly without a fitting.

Before committing to any of the tailoring here, ask the seller for a flat-lay shoulder-to-shoulder and sleeve measurement and compare them against a jacket you already own. The sizes in these titles are the labels sewn into the garments, not verified dimensions, and on a piece that has been altered once already the tag can be meaningless.
