What $150 buys in a women's coat

Six coats listed on eBay between $150 and $225, from a $2,295 Max Mara camel to a 1990s Jil Sander, and what to check before buying at that price.

A new wool coat from a mainstream retailer and a used coat from Max Mara or Jil Sander can occupy the same $150 to $250 window. The difference is not that one is discounted and the other is not. It is that the mainstream coat is priced at what it costs to make plus a normal retail margin, while the secondhand coat is priced by whatever a single seller decided to ask on a single afternoon.

That second number is far less disciplined than the first. Retail prices converge because every brand in the category is watching the others. Resale prices scatter, because the person listing a coat is usually solving for closet space rather than for market rate, and because a coat photographed badly on a hanger in poor light will sit unsold at any price.

So the useful question at this budget is not which garment is better made. It is which listings have been mispriced by their sellers, and what you have to accept in exchange. Every coat below carries something you would not accept at retail: a decade of age, an unverified fit, a colour that shows wear.

Chloe Short Collared Wool Coat (42)
Chloé
Chloe Short Collared Wool Coat (42)
$200 vs $2,300 retail 91% below
Two hundred dollars against a $2,300 retail figure is the widest gap in this group, and gaps that wide usually mean the listing is missing something a buyer wants: measurements, a fabric label, a photograph of the coat on a body. The 42 reads as Italian sizing, which puts it around a US 6 to 8, but a short collared coat has very little tolerance in the shoulder. Get that measurement before committing.

Lux Alpaca And Wool Coat Shale Gray Brown Eileen Fisher L
$200 vs $698 retail 71% below
Alpaca is a hollow fibre, which is why an alpaca-wool coat feels lighter in the hand than its warmth suggests, and why it drapes rather than holds a line. Eileen Fisher's cuts are generous and largely unstructured, so the L here is more forgiving than a tailored L from any other brand on this list. That same softness is the risk: alpaca blends flatten and shine at the elbows and seat, so look closely at those areas.

See by Chloé
See By Chloe Coat Sz 4 Off White Made in Italy
$170 vs $975 retail 83% below
See by Chloé is the diffusion line, priced at retail well below the main house, so the $975 here is a lower ceiling than the Chloé above and the $170 asking price is a narrower discount than it first appears. Off-white outerwear is where secondhand pricing gets soft, because collar and cuff soiling is difficult to photograph honestly and expensive to correct. Ask what the collar looks like in daylight.

Italy Max Mara Women's Camel 100% Virgin Wool Coat Size USA 10, Classic Style!
Max Mara
Italy Max Mara Women's Camel 100% Virgin Wool Coat Size USA 10, Classic Style!
$169 vs $2,295 retail 93% below
The camel overcoat is the garment Max Mara is known for, which cuts both ways at resale: demand is steady, but so is supply, and a plain example without a recognisable model name clears slowly. At $169 against $2,295, this is the strongest price-to-brand ratio in the group. Camel shows everything, so the condition photographs matter more here than on any of the darker coats.

$698 Theory Black Wool Coralia Dress Coat Medium - Worn 2x. Downsizing Closet!!
Theory
$698 Theory Black Wool Coralia Dress Coat Medium - Worn 2x. Downsizing Closet!!
$150 vs $745 retail 80% below
A seller who volunteers that a coat was worn twice and that they are clearing a closet is telling you the price is about motivation rather than market rate. That is the cheapest coat here and the one closest to new condition, which is an unusual pairing. Theory's dress coats are cut close through the body, so if you intend to wear a jacket underneath, the Medium will not do it.

Vintage 90s Jil Sander Overcoat Size 38
Jil Sander
Vintage 90s Jil Sander Overcoat Size 38
$225 vs $1,100 retail 80% below
This is the only piece here priced above the anchor band, and the only one where the era is doing the pricing. Jil Sander's own tenure at the label ran through the 1990s, and coats attributed to that period trade at a premium over the post-2000 Prada-era production. A 38 is continental, roughly a US 6, and thirty-year-old sizing tends to run smaller still, so treat the tag as a starting point rather than an answer.

Buying at this level means doing the work the retailer would otherwise do for you. Ask for shoulder and sleeve measurements in inches rather than trusting the size tag, since a European 38 and a US 10 are not the same garment and vintage sizing is smaller again. Check the lining and the underarms in the seller's photos, and if those photos do not exist, ask for them before you bid.
