Ermenegildo Zegna Couture

Couture was the house's runway tier, the line shown at fashion weeks and the one where design direction was set. Stefano Pilati led it in the first half of the 2010s, and Alessandro Sartori took over after returning in 2016. It is ready-to-wear, not bespoke; Zegna's made-to-measure service is a separate thing called Su Misura. Expect more directional cuts and unusual fabric pairings than on the mainline, which makes fit and taste matter more when buying it secondhand.

Ermenegildo Zegna (mainline)

The mainline is the classic tailoring most people picture when they hear the name, and it is the label you will meet most often in resale listings. Zegna weaves much of its own cloth at its mill in Trivero, in the Biella wool district, and mainline suits and jackets frequently carry a named house fabric such as Trofeo, Traveller or 15milmil15. That cloth tag, usually inside the jacket or on the sleeve label of an unworn piece, tells you more than the brand name does. Construction varies by model and era, so feel the chest for floating canvas rather than assuming it.

Z Zegna

Z Zegna was the diffusion line, introduced in the mid-2000s for a younger customer who wanted slimmer cuts at a lower price. Silhouettes run shorter and closer than the mainline, so size down mentally before assuming a tagged 50 fits like a classic 50. Fabrics and finishing were simpler to hit the price, and many jackets use fused rather than canvassed fronts. It was retired when the house consolidated in 2022.

Zegna Sport

Zegna Sport covered outerwear, knitwear and casual pieces for decades before the consolidation, and it is where the house put its technical and travel-oriented work. Judge these pieces as outerwear rather than tailoring: check zips, cuffs, membranes and seam tape, which age faster than wool does. A clean shell from this line is a different proposition from a tired one with delaminating lining, whatever the label says.

Unified ZEGNA (post-2022)

In 2022 the house dropped the separate labels and moved everything under a single ZEGNA name, with Sartori directing the whole collection. Current pieces mix the soft tailoring, knitwear and outerwear that used to live in different lines. On the secondhand market this means the label alone no longer tells you which tier a garment came from, so the cloth, the construction and the original retail category do that work instead.

How to read each label

A quick reference for what to check when a Zegna piece turns up secondhand.

LabelWhat it wasWhat to check

The rule
On older Zegna, the label tells you the tier; on anything from 2022 onward, it does not. In either case, find the cloth tag and press the chest before you bid, because those two checks tell you what the garment actually is.
