Storm System is Loro Piana's name for a two-part approach to weather protection rather than a single material. A water-repellent finish on the face of the cloth makes rain bead rather than soak in, and a windproof, breathable membrane bonded behind the fabric stops the wind the cloth alone would let through. The point is that the protection is built into the textile, so the garment still reads and drapes as tailoring rather than as a technical shell.
Storm System is used primarily across outerwear, and Loro Piana labels the garments that carry it rather than leaving buyers to infer it from the hand of the cloth. That matters secondhand, because the treatment is invisible: look for the Storm System marking on the interior label or the original hangtag rather than judging by weight or weave. Both the Loro Piana Chore Coat and the women's Loro Piana Coat are categories where it commonly turns up.
Two things age at different rates, and it helps to know which one you are looking at. The face repellency is the first to dull, because wear and repeated cleaning flatten it, and that is the part a specialist re-proofing can usually restore. The membrane behind it is the harder problem: bonded laminates fail by separating from the fabric, which is not a repair so much as the end of the garment's weather protection.
Check the interior for discoloration or bubbling where the membrane meets the seams, which is the visible signature of delamination beginning. Run a light spray of water across the outer surface; it should bead and roll off without darkening the cloth. Look closely at shoulders, cuffs and zipper tunnels, where abrasion concentrates, for small punctures or lifted seam tape.
The mispricing runs in the buyer's favour more often than not. Because the technology is invisible and sits under a label most resellers do not recognise, a Storm System coat is frequently listed and priced as a plain wool overcoat of the same weight. The buyer who knows what the marking means is paying the overcoat price for a garment that also blocks wind and sheds rain.
